Spring Clean in Lambourn

6th June 2021

Lambourn participated in The Great British Spring Clean yesterday with volunteers collecting sacks of litter and rubbish as part of an organised spring clean. The national campaign was delayed a little because of the covid restrictions however between the 28th May and the 13th June communities throughout Britain are doing their bit to keep Britain tidy.

Public spirited individuals met at the Old Cricket Field, put on their hi-viz vests and gloves and set off with sacks to clear out litter. “We collected many many sacks of litter,” said Julie Pitt, “it’s quite amazing what people throw away from a drink can thrown out of a car window all the way to mattresses dumped by the wayside.”

Lambourn has a great community spirit. “We want our village to look well kept and be a place which is safe for all.” said Cathy Brown as they collected broken glass and pieces of metal which could easily harm people and wildlife.

West Berkshire Council supported the activity by providing litter picking equipment as well as organising the removal of the bags of rubbish collected by the volunteers.

The event was organised by Julie Pitt under the auspices of the Lambourn Junction Community Interest Company. “Organising an event like this is not quite as straightforward as it was years ago. We have to arrange insurance in case something happens, have risk assessments and really keep the safety of the volunteers front of mind.” said Cathy Brown, who is one of the unpaid directors of the company. “We formed the not-for-profit company to enable the community spirited individuals to concentrate on the activities whilst we support them and ensure that all the right steps are followed.”

If you would like to organise a community event and are not quite sure about aspects such as health and safety, insurance and liability please contact the Lambourn Junction Community Interest Company.
