Fair on the Square – Late Night Christmas Shopping

Once again our local shops opened their doors until late and although it was cold the rain kept its distance.
Lambourn Universal Stores (the Hub of the village!) opened with Ross, Christine, Wendy, Angela and Richard being there to help as always, offering a bite to eat and a glass of wine. They were joined by local celebrities John Francome and Peter Walwyn who were there to sign their latest books. It was a lovely atmosphere and apart from shopping a chance to catch up and chat with friends who were also enjoying the evening.
Jaquie and Julie opened the Library and hosted our local ‘Lambourn Chimers’ who were amazing and the Children were singing carols.
Moving on, Neil opened the butchers shop and had a fine display of very tempting meat..along with a taste of Con Carne, Curry and.mince pies!
The Co-op joined in the festivities and entertained the children with a colouring competition and face painting. Elizabeth and Henry Jefferies of Devonia Bakery organised gingerbread-men decorating for the children.
The Methodist Church kept everyone warm supplying hot soup and drinks. Organiser Margaret Curtis said “although we are a wee bit out of the way we were very busy.” the money raised went toward the 388 gift-filled boxes collected from Lambourn and the surrounding district by the church, for Africa and Eastern Europe.
On the Square there was a glorious aroma of burgers! Merry-go-round rides for the children and the nostalgic sound of an old Fairground Organ, Riding for the Disabled with ‘Drummer’ the Reindeer! And to the delight of the children..a flying visit from Santa who stopped by during his busy schedule! The Racing Welfare opened their doors and the Memorial Hall was full of stalls where you could buy Cakes (WI) Jewellery, Toys and Jams etc.
The Police Office also opened during the festivities and gave away sweets and toys to visiting children.

Thank you to everyone who worked on late into the evening, having worked all day too!
