Vine and Craven Boxing Day Hunt 2019
The drizzling rain did not deter the hunt and over 200 supporters meeting in Lambourn on Boxing Day morning for the V&C Boxing Day Drag Hunt. Port and BBQ sausages were passed around as the horses gathered prior to setting off along the High Street and the to the open Downland.
Every year the hunt supports a local charity and this year the V&C have chosen the Lambourn Foodbank. Visitors deposited lots of bags of items for the food bank at the entrance gate to the paddock demonstrating that Lambourn has a big heart for those who need a little help at difficult times.
In drag hunting, a pack of hounds follows a scent laid by a human rather than pursuing a live animal. The line is laid over a pre-determined route to take advantage of the best jumping opportunities.
Drag hunting was developed in the UK in the early 1800s to test the speed and agility of hounds, by laying a scent trail over a specified distance.
Hounds have an amazing sense of smell and a trail is laid using a scent, usually aniseed, which the hounds pick up and follow.
