I see my Great uncle x2 Harry Dawson Bates in two of the above photos
How very interesting William! Really good to know your connection with Harry Bates and our Lambourn History. Had you seen these photos before?
The trainer in the picture of the horse Crotanstown above is my ancestor, James Henry Clarkson. I believe the lad on Crotanstown in the picture is his son, Henry Hollingworth Clarkson. The 1891 census for Lambourn has him staying at Lad’s House; his occupation was given as ‘racing foreman’.
Hello George
Thank you for contacting the website and for submitting the interesting information for our page, it is always good to put names to faces.
Harry Dawson Bates’s son Major Frederick Stanley Bates was a director of Odeon Theatres Limited from its flotation in 1937 until 1950,serving as a managing director with Sir John Davis from 1942 to 1948.
How interesting Colin, thanks for sharing that snippet with the website. There isn’t a great deal of available information for Harry Dawson Bates.
Colin,Thanks for that information on my ancestors as I have very little information on him and what you have provided ,gives me a lead, thanks again
Hi Liz
Harry Dawson Bates was the son of Fred Bates Horse trainer at Stork House and Tupgul Park
His Grandfather was Thomas Dawson Horse trainer originally from Gullane, and later in Coverham
His Great Uncle was the Famous Horse Trainer Matt Dawson
Google The Dawsons Of Newmarket
Thomas Dawson and Fred Bates are both Buried at The Holy Trinity Church Coverham
Just to put the record straight, I concur with George Clarkson that in the picture of Crotanstown is James Henry Clarkson (my Great Grandfather). But the lad in the saddle is not Henry Hollingworth Clarkson (my Grandfather). Henry was born in 1889 and therefore would have been only 6 years old when the photo was taken.
