“The Lambourn Drivers”
Bookings taken on 01488 71536 on a Monday or Thursday between 10 am and 12 noon
If you need door to door transport to healthcare appointments our volunteers drivers can help. Whether it is a trip in the village to the Lambourn surgery or a longer drive to a hospital appointment in Swindon, Oxford or Newbury our friendly volunteers will pick you up from your house and take you to your appointment and drive you back afterwards.
This is a door to door personal transport service operated by our willing volunteers. Our drivers use their own vehicles to take clients to and from the venue and will accompany the client throughout the hospital appointment if required. Some Drivers vehicles can take folding wheelchairs and walking aids so it advisable to let the driver know if you need any aids to accompany you.
To book the service please give us plenty of notice so that we can schedule a driver for you in good time. If you are a patient requiring transport, please call the office on 01488 71536 on a Monday or Thursday between 10 am and 12 noon stating when and where your appointment is and if you have any mobility constraints which may require extra time. The driver will ring you and agree the time they will pick you up.
A little History
Our service started in the early 1990s when it provided not only transport to medical appointments but also arranged outings for those who are otherwise unable to get out and about. The service today focuses entirely on the transport of clients to and from medical appointments. With a team of (nearly) 40 volunteers the service is as busy now as it has ever been. We are a registered charity (Number: 1078512) and receive some funding from West Berkshire Council. We reimburse our drivers 50p per mile and that is the maximum we are allowed to pay without involving tax. You will be handed a little envelope and any donation towards our expenses would be most welcome. There is also a chart available from the Driver detailing how much it costs us to reimburse our drivers for the mileage to local hospitals.
Our drivers come from many different backgrounds and all have a common bond in wanting to give something back to their communities. No previous experience is required just a friendly caring attitude and some spare time. We offer complete flexibility so you can volunteer as little or as much as you like, whilst fitting in with other commitments.
