Lambourn Royal British Legion closure
It will be a very sad day when Lambourn Royal British Legion has to close. The Club began from the humble beginnings of a former NAAFI hut on a site bought for £500.
In 1946 the Lambourn Branch of the British Legion was nearing the 20th year of its existence. The influx of war-time service men had increased branch membership to an unprecedented level. It became apparent the ‘Hinds Head’ was no longer adequate as headquarters and member’s ambitions turned towards having their own club and headquarters A decision was taken at a branch general meeting late in 1946 to acquire a club-room as soon as possible.
The old hut was to be the Legion’s home in Lambourn for 17 years until after a period of fundraising, the new building was erected alongside. The new club was opened in September 1964 by Major General Beak, VC. Many improvements were made, the billiards room in 1967, the lounge bar in 1974
It became a ‘hub’ of the Village, the wonderful New Year Parties, Dances, Remembrance Day gatherings, Parties, Funeral gatherings and many more, but now, sadly, the roof needs too much work and it has become unfeasible to keep the club open. A very sad day for Lambourn, it leaves many with great memories of days gone by.
