With reference to Fred Templeman, here are a couple of photos of him, as a jockey and in later life. Fred George Templeman, born 10th Feb 1892 – 17th May 1973, won the 1919 Epsom Derby on Grand Parade and the Royal Hunt Cup on Irish Elegance in 1919 among his many successes. Among the photos unearthed yesterday, is an April 1931 newspaper photo, hence the discolouration. The very faint pencil writing on the back describes it as Carousal leading, but the race was won by something like Ballysclanlon (very faint) and ridden by Freddie Fox.
In 1919, Freddie Templeman had been race riding in India, but returned to the UK early in that year to continue riding. However his weight was defeating him and he started to train at Meridian and Elmfield in 1921. He had considerable success from there, his stable was the largest in Berkshire, with 64 horses, apart from Seven Barrows. He retired in 1956, but continued at Meridian breeding bloodstock and with his stud at Mildenhall near Marlborough. He eventually died in 1973. He was never training at Meridian in 1919 according to official records though.
