Lambourn marks the 80th Anniversary of D-Day

In a ceremony on the Downs above Lambourn, the community came together to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day with the lighting of a beacon. The event, held on the evening of June 6th, was a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of those who took part in the historic landings on the beaches of Normandy in 1944.

Rev Julie Mintern

Reverend Julie Mintern addressed the gathering, delivering a heartfelt speech that paid tribute to the soldiers who fought and gave their lives on that fateful day. “We are gathered here not just to remember the events of D-Day but to honor the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of those who fought for our freedom,” she said. Her words resonated deeply with those in attendance, creating a moment of reflection and gratitude.

Precisely at 9.15pm, the beacon was lit, casting a warm glow over the Downs and symbolising the enduring spirit of remembrance. As the flames flickered, other beacons became visible on the distant horizon, a testament to the national effort to honor D-Day. Communities across the country participated in this commemorative act, lighting beacons in unison to create a chain of light stretching far and wide.

Nicky Henderson and the Beacon Crew

The event, well-attended by the local community, was kindly organised by Nicky Henderson in conjunction with Lambourn Parish Council. Their efforts ensured that the evening was not only memorable but also respectful of the significance of the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

Following the lighting of the beacon, the night sky was illuminated by a spectacular fireworks display. The first rocket, soaring high and bursting into a cascade of light, was dedicated to the memory of Jim Bracey, a much loved member of the Lambourn Community who died recently.

The atmosphere was one of unity and shared remembrance as families, friends, and neighbours stood together under the night sky, reflecting on the past and looking towards a future shaped by the sacrifices of those who came before.
