The Carnival committee met recently – via Zoom of course – and reluctantly came to the conclusion that in the current climate we cannot run the Carnival parade this August, nor most of the other Festival events, even though progress is slowly being made towards opening up society. Granted, football and racing are starting up again, but without spectators. The whole purpose of Carnival is for people to come together as a crowd, either taking part on floats, or watching in the street. We just do not know if this would be possible in August; whether the government would allow it and whether people would be prepared to take part. We will not know until much nearer the time and we felt it was unreasonable to ask people to spend time and money working on their entries only to find, nearer the time, that restrictions still prevented Carnival from taking place.
What we suggest instead, is that as many people as possible have a picnic or BBQ in their front gardens on the afternoon of Carnival day (Sunday August 30th) to keep the spirit alive!
We had already booked 2 local mobile discos for the parade and they have agreed that on the day they will drive round the village, playing music and providing entertainment for everyone.
You could decorate the front of your house / flat / garden and you could also dress up, as if for Carnival. We will be awarding prizes for the best decorations and best fancy dress (details to follow).
You may have seen the notices that the Scarecrow competition will be running, and we hope that the Car Treasure Hunt will take place towards the end of August, since neither of these have to involve breaching the Social Distancing regulations.
If you have any other ideas of games or competitions which could be run “at distance” or even “virtually” , in the spirit of Carnival, please let us know, via email lambournfestival@yahoo.com or phone 01488 71468.
